SYNONYMS IN ONLINE NEWS: A STUDY OF FORM, MEANING, AND FUNCTION ON BCO.CO.ID

This study aims to analyze the form, meaning, and function of synonyms in news articles from the online news outlet bco.co.id. A descriptive qualitative research method was employed, as the data consisted of words in the form of nouns and verbs. Data were collected using the "listen and note" technique and analyzed using the *padan* (referential matching) method, with the referent serving as the basis for analysis. The data were sourced from the Cilegon Online news Facebook account during March 2026. The analysis identified six instances of contextual synonyms: two verbs (*hadir*–*datang* and *rampung*–*selesai*) and four nouns (*jenazah*–*mayat*, *calon*–*kandidat*, *tarif*–*harga*, and *pria*–*laki-laki*). The use of synonyms is influenced by context, meaning, and nuance, as not all words with similar meanings are interchangeable across different sentences. The functions of these synonyms include providing lexical variation, reducing repetition, emphasizing information, and aligning word choice with the specific context and nuance of the news reporting.
