Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism Policy

1. Policy Statement

SETYAKI: Jurnal Studi Keagamaan Islam is committed to maintaining academic integrity, originality, and ethical scholarly publishing. All manuscripts submitted to the journal must be original works that properly acknowledge the ideas, words, data, and contributions of other authors.

Plagiarism, in any form, is considered a violation of publication ethics and is not acceptable. Authors are responsible for ensuring that their submissions comply with accepted standards of academic writing, citation, referencing, and research integrity.

2. Forms of Plagiarism and Related Misconduct

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the following practices:

  1. Direct plagiarism: Copying words, sentences, paragraphs, or substantial portions of another work without proper quotation, attribution, or citation.

  2. Paraphrasing plagiarism: Rewriting another author's ideas or arguments without appropriate acknowledgment of the original source.

  3. Self-plagiarism and text recycling: Reusing substantial portions of one's previously published work without proper citation or transparent disclosure.

  4. Duplicate publication: Submitting or publishing substantially the same work in more than one journal or publication venue without appropriate disclosure and authorization.

  5. Data, figure, and table plagiarism: Using another person's data, tables, figures, images, or other materials without proper attribution or permission where required.

  6. Source misrepresentation: Citing sources that have not been consulted, misrepresenting the meaning of a cited source, or presenting another person's findings as one's own.

  7. Improper authorship or contribution claims: Presenting another person's intellectual contribution as one's own or failing to acknowledge significant contributions where acknowledgment is appropriate.

Proper citation does not automatically make extensive copying acceptable. Manuscripts must demonstrate the authors' own scholarly contribution, analysis, and interpretation.

3. Plagiarism Screening

All submitted manuscripts may be screened for textual similarity using plagiarism-detection software or other appropriate screening methods during the editorial process.

Similarity reports are assessed by the editorial team in context. The assessment considers the nature and location of matching text, the originality of the manuscript, the adequacy of citations, the use of quotations, the reference list, and the scholarly significance of the matched material.

A similarity percentage alone does not establish whether plagiarism has occurred. Editorial decisions are based on a substantive assessment of the report and the manuscript rather than on a numerical score alone.

The journal may request clarification or revisions from authors when potentially problematic similarities are identified. Manuscripts showing serious indications of plagiarism or other publication misconduct may be rejected.

4. Authors' Responsibilities

Authors submitting manuscripts to SETYAKI must:

  1. Ensure that the submitted work is original and has not been published previously in substantially the same form, except where prior dissemination is explicitly permitted by the journal's policy and fully disclosed.

  2. Properly cite and reference all sources used in the manuscript.

  3. Use quotation marks and appropriate citations when reproducing exact wording from other sources.

  4. Obtain permission for copyrighted materials when required.

  5. Disclose relevant overlap with the authors' previous publications and provide copies of related works when requested by the editor.

  6. Ensure that all listed references are accurate and genuinely support the claims attributed to them.

  7. Cooperate with editorial inquiries concerning originality, citation practices, and research integrity.

Authors remain responsible for the originality and integrity of their manuscripts, including any text or material prepared with the assistance of third parties or digital tools.

5. Editorial Assessment and Investigation

When potential plagiarism or related misconduct is identified, the editor will assess the available evidence and determine the appropriate course of action. The assessment may include reviewing the similarity report, comparing the relevant sources, examining the context of the overlapping material, and requesting an explanation from the author.

Authors will normally be given an opportunity to respond to concerns before a final decision is made, except where immediate action is necessary to protect the integrity of the publication process.

The journal will handle allegations fairly, confidentially to the extent reasonably possible, and consistently with its publication ethics policies. Decisions will be based on the evidence available and the seriousness of the identified concern.

6. Possible Actions

Depending on the nature, extent, and context of the misconduct, the journal may take one or more of the following actions:

  1. Request clarification or additional information from the author.

  2. Require appropriate corrections, citations, or revisions before further consideration.

  3. Reject the manuscript during the editorial assessment or peer-review process.

  4. Suspend editorial processing while the concern is investigated.

  5. Retract a published article when serious plagiarism or other misconduct is established and warrants retraction.

  6. Notify the relevant institution or other appropriate body when necessary and justified by the circumstances.

The action taken will be proportionate to the seriousness of the violation and the evidence available. Minor citation errors and deliberate appropriation of substantial intellectual content will not necessarily be treated in the same way.

7. Plagiarism in Published Articles

If credible evidence of plagiarism is identified after publication, SETYAKI will review the matter in accordance with its publication ethics and correction or retraction policies.

Where necessary, the journal may publish a correction, an expression of concern, or a retraction notice. Any action will be documented transparently, and the article's publication record will be maintained in accordance with the journal's policies.

8. Use of Similarity-Detection Tools

Similarity-detection software is used as an aid to editorial assessment and does not replace human judgment. A high similarity score does not automatically prove plagiarism, and a low score does not guarantee that a manuscript is free from plagiarism or other forms of misconduct.

The editorial team evaluates the substance of potential matches, including unattributed copying, inappropriate paraphrasing, duplicate publication, and reuse of previously published material.

9. Final Responsibility

By submitting a manuscript to SETYAKI, authors acknowledge their responsibility to comply with this Plagiarism Policy and the journal's other editorial and publication ethics requirements.

The journal reserves the right to take appropriate action when a manuscript or published article is found to violate this policy.
