Religious Outreach Strategies for Encouraging Community Participation in Charitable Giving: A Case Study of the UPZ “Kenclengisasi” Program in Sukanagara Village

Unlike prior studies that examine Islamic philanthropy at the level of large zakat institutions or through survey-based intention models, this study examines infaq giving as a religious behavior at the smallest institutional level, the village Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ). Using a qualitative case study of the kenclengisasi (household coin-box) program of UPZ Sukanagara Village, Ciamis Regency, it explores how religious counseling strategies relate to the way households practice and interpret regular micro-infaq. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six informants, participant observation of the coin-box opening and deposit process, and document review, and were analyzed with the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. UPZ Sukanagara applies four integrated counseling strategies: community-based education, a household-based movement, transparency and accountability, and tangible utilization programs. The coin box also works as a passive counseling medium: it carries a printed religious message, lowers the effort of giving, and makes giving routine. Residents' participation appears to follow two pathways, namely religious meaning internalized from counseling and imitation of neighbors. Monthly records show that the mean collection in April 2025-August 2026 was about 5.6 times the mean in November 2023-March 2025; because this is a qualitative case study, these figures are descriptive indications and do not establish causality. The study offers a conceptual reading of kenclengisasi as an embodied and socially embedded religious behavior.
